Reishi mushroom, known as Ling Zhi in the Chinese Materia Medica, is also known as the “mushroom of immortality.” It has been used continuously for centuries in East, and is prized for its vitality enhancing and longevity promoting qualities. It has been shown to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Modern research has also pointed towards anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties.

There are a lot of different mushroom supplements on the market, and they are not all created equal. We have a limited supply of high-quality Empowered Reishi, produced by People’s Herbs, in stock. There are not many products that are truly good for everyone, but Reishi comes pretty close!

Justin Lane holds a Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) and is licensed to practice acupuncture in the State of California. He is nationally board certified in acupuncture, massage and Chinese Herbal Medicine. Prior to studying Chinese Medicine, Justin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from San Francisco State University, which included a one year study abroad program at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel.

Justin first discovered Chinese Medicine as a teenager, when it successfully treated his cold and flu. He was fascinated by this and became equally curious about the use of the herbal medicines in the pharmacy of his acupuncturist. These feelings only intensified as time moved on until it became clear that he must learn more. As a devoted practitioner of Chinese Medicine, Justin has been involved in the complementary medicine field for over 8 years, and has been dedicated to the health and wellness of others for most of his adult life.

Justin’s passion in life is his work. Since 2004, Justin has helped hundreds of patients with a variety of chronic health issues, ranging from fatigue, anxiety/stress, depression and allergies to digestive disorders, PMS and acute/chronic pain. Dedicated to his field and keen to motivate, educate and inspire others, his number one goal is for his patients to achieve their healthcare goals.

As of February 10th, we have left the Dragon behind and entered the Snake. Traditionally, the first two weeks of the New Year are spent celebrating with community, eating good food, letting go of old grudges, and setting gentle intentions for the year to come. The Snake is a creative and intelligent sign, with a decidedly internal bent to its character. A year of tremendous opportunity to explore fundamentally what makes you tick!

Gabriella Biase

Gabi is a licensed acupuncturist, with a Master’s in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She specializes in musculoskeletal problems. She did her undergraduate study in the biomedical sciences, focusing on pre-med, which gave her a strong foundation with which to approach the alternative health field. She has had a passion for bodywork for many years, and her approach reflects her diverse study and influences. “Eastern” modalities such as tui na and acupressure, and also “western” modalities such as Alexander Technique, orthobionomy, and pilates help shape her practice. She is committed to the idea that the treatment of the whole person is the point of departure for having success with any treatment, no matter the condition that is present.

Welcome new Practitioners, Gabi and Ozben!

We have the good fortune to welcome several new highly skilled practitioners to the Octagon team. This means we are extended our evening treatment hours on Wednesdays, and have massage therapists available on more shifts. An appointment is always recommended, especially for massage sessions.

Gabriella Biase has been a substitute acupuncturist here for a while, and she is starting a regular shift on Wednesday evenings, from 530 to 8 (last appointment just after 7). She is an experienced acupuncturist and herbalist, and a mother of two beautiful children.

Ozben Martini will be available for Tui Na therapeutic massage on Mondays from 1 to 4, and on Saturdays from 10 to 12. You can make appointments on-line with our scheduling software to experience her healing touch.

Herman Hung Mou Chen is another recent addition, whose bodywork skills are receiving rave reviews from our patients. He is also available for massage therapy several days a week.

Herman Hung Mou Chen is a California Certified Massage Therapist. (C.M.T). Coming from Taiwan, he has always been interested in acupressure and Chinese style Tui-Na massage. He began his formal education at ACCHS in Oakland at the end of October 2010, whilst working full time to obtain his 500-hour certification. He has formal working experience in the modalities of deep tissue, tuina, hot stones, dry wraps, Swedish and reflexology. Since obtaining his certification, he has provided massage sessions to friends, family, and at least 40 clients per week. He has a busy practice and loves sharing the gift of these ancient techniques with others.

Ozben Martini

After graduating from Galatasaray University, one of the most prestigious universities in Turkey, Ozben came to the United States, and was introduced to Traditional Chinese Medicine. She fell in love with Eastern Medicine, and focused her life on the study of TCM, including both acupressure and acupuncture. She started studying acupressure at the Acupressure Institute in 2009, and is now certified by the California Massage Therapy Council as a Professional Practitioner. The modalities of body work she uses are Tui Na, Shiatsu, Refloxology and Jin Shin Style acupressure. She customizes her sessions, incorporating different modalities based on clients’ sensitivities and conditions.

Ozben is currently studying acupuncture at the Academy of Chinese Health and Sciences. In her spare time she is an ardent student of Aikido and both Japanese and Chinese tea ceremony.
